Texas Exceptionalism Award

The spirit and culture of Texas make this state different from all others. From its unique history to

traditions that are still celebrated today, Texas exceptionalism—the basis of the Lone Star identity—is so

extraordinary that it should be promoted and taught for the benefit of future generations.

Acting on this belief, the Texas Historical Foundation Board of Directors created the Texas

Exceptionalism Award, to be given annually for the best essay describing the reasons for the pride,

love, loyalty, and spirit that Texans have long had for the Republic The competition is open to writers

of all ages, and the winning essay will be reprinted in Texas HERITAGE magazine. Individuals should

submit an electronic copy of the essay, not to exceed 1,500 words, in pdf format, by January 31, 2015, to

admin@texashistoricalfoundation.org. Submission automatically assigns all author’s rights of copyright to

the THF; the winner, who will receive $2,000, will be announced in April 2015.

The Texas Exceptionalism Award celebrates the concept that ideas and beliefs impact education and

culture and that emphasis on Texas heritage can influence the future of For 60 years, the Texas Historical

Foundation has been helping save the icons of Lone Star history.

Professor Stephen Hardin of McMurry University in Abilene, pictured center, was the the winner of the
