Star of Texas Award
THF’s Star of Texas Award recognizes exceptional ongoing contributions the preservation of Lone Star history
and culture.
In 2012, Frost Bank and the Frost Family received this honor, which was accepted by Don Frost, executive vice
president of Frost Bank San Antonio, Capital Markets Division. After noting their 146-year history in the Lone
Star State, Chairman Tom Doell said while making the presentation, “In this era of banks that are either ‘too big
to fail’ or ‘too failed to be big,’ Frost Bank stands out as [an exceptional] model.”
In 2014, Houston businessman J.P. Bryan received the second-ever Star of Texas Award. Bryan, a leader of
the state’s preservation movement, has spent his life saving the Lone Star past: he restored the Gage Hotel in
Marathon; he has assembled a world-class collection of maps, books, artwork, and Texana artifacts; and he will
soon open a museum in a historic Galveston building to share these treasures with a broader audience.
