The Texas State Historical Survey Committee (now the Texas Historical Commission) is created by the state’s 53rd Legislature on June 14 to identify private preservationists, endangered artifacts, and papers.

The Texas Historical Foundation (THF) is established to support this work.

The Texas Legislature begins to appropriate increased state funds to the TSHSC.

TSHSC and THF amass an impressive list of accomplishments:

~ More than 1,700 historic structures and 1,300 restored

~ Facilitated the creation of 300 regional archives

~ Nearly 7,000 historical markers placed

THF and THC separate and become independent organizations.

The THF board adopts a two-fold mission: provide grant funding for preservation projects and promote Texas history education.

The THF board creates a quarterly history publication; the first issue of Texas HERITAGE magazine is printed.

THF creates six preservation endowments over the years, addressing the needs of projects that range from archeology to rural programs & legal preservation.

THF facilitates preservation by providing nearly to Texas organizations and celebrates its anniversary. The Texas Historical Foundation has remained a viable funding organization since 1954 by refining its goals in order to fit the evolving needs of the preservation community.
